"hostilities"

Includes both international and national conflicts that involve two or more formal military forces or armed combatants. This may include a large-scale internal conflict where the national military are called out to fight an internal insurrection. For the Census, ‘hostilities’ does not refer to one-time protests. For the protests to be considered hostilities, they would have to be a part of an ongoing armed conflict.
