"non-governmental organization [NGO]"

A nonprofit organization that operates independently of any government, typically one whose purpose is to address a social or political issue. The World Wide Fund for Nature or the Salvation Army are examples of large international NGOs. There are also innumerable national and local NGOs around the world.
